Common Admission Test (CAT) is an entrance exam for admission to post graduate management courses in all the Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) and various other management institutes. IIMs are undoubtedly the best management institutes in the country with a worldwide reputation. Every year lakhs of students appear for CAT and the competition is very tough for IIMs and the other reputed institutes. CAT aspirants start preparing for CAT much before the actual examination and often opt for specialized training.

CAT is one of the toughest exams in India. The Combined Admission Test is taken for to fill the vacant places of Six IIMs i.e. IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Kolkata, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode and few other top most B- School like SP Jain, MICA, and T A Pai etc. CAT tests the skills of aspiring candidates in five steps each having broad areas. They are Verbal Ability and Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Skills, Data Interpretation and Analytical and Logical Reasoning.



CAT Eligibility Criteria

  • For general candidates: A candidate should have got at least 50% or equivalent CGPA in Graduation.
  • For SC/ST candidates: A candidate should have got at least 45% or equivalent CGPA in Graduation.
  • Final year candidates who will complete their Graduation in the current year of the exam appeared can also apply.

CAT Exam Syllabus

As such, CAT has no restricted syllabus and the candidate has to be proficient in all the sections under which the exam has been taken.
CAT is of two and a half hours duration having multiple-choice questions from the following sections:

  • Data Interpretation logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative Ability
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

Candidates are expected to perform well in all the three sections as there are separate cut-offs for individual sections as well. Each question has five options. A candidate gets four marks for a right answer and one mark is deducted for an incorrect answer.

CAT Examination

CAT vouchers are available through selected Axis bank branches by the end of August. After buying, the voucher candidates will be supposed to apply online. The voucher will be available for Rs. 1600 for general candidates and for Rs. 800 for SC/ST candidates. Admit Cards will also be sent by e-mail to the candidates, which they will have to print.
IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi and IIM Tiruchirappalli also organize Fellow Programs in Management (FPM) through the same test only.

Before a prospective candidate makes a decision to appear for CAT Admission Test 2011, he / she must visit the websites of IIM http://www.catiim.in and / or read program advertisements of the concerned IIMs and specific programs to ensure which programs they want to apply for eligibility requirements and admission processes of Indian Institutes of Management. A candidate can appear for CAT Entrance Exam 2011 only once during the 20 days testing window.
Each IIM follows its own admission process of IIM CAT 2011 independent of other IIMs.
