To recruit geologists in the organizations of the Central Government, the UPSC conducts Geologists’ Examination every year. The rules for the exam are in accordance with those published in the Gazette of India by the Ministry of Mines. The study concerned with the dynamics, structure and evolution of the earth- its natural energy and mineral resources, is called Geology. The allied disciplines of geology are hydrogeology, geo-physics, marine geology etc.


Eligibility Criteria

A Citizen of India, Bhutan, A subject of Nepal, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.

A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and he / she must have been born not earlier than 2 January 1979 and not later than 1st January. 1990.

A candidate should have Master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management. Subjects like  Oceanography and Coastal areas studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Geochemistry from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or an educational Institution established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 ( 3 of 1956 ).

Mode of Entrance Exam

The exam consists of two stages. The first stage is a written examination and the second is an interview. The interview carries 200 marks.

The subjects for the written examination are given below:

  • The first subject is General English. Duration is 2 hours and maximum marks are 100.
  • The second subject is Geology paper I, which is of 3 hours duration.
  • The third subject is Geology paper II. The duration is 3 hours.
  • Geology paper III is the fourth subject with the duration being 3 hours.
  • The fifth paper is Hydrogeology. Duration is again 3 hours.

The marks carried by all the subjects mentioned above are 200 except for the first one that carries 100 marks.

Candidates who clear the written test are called for an interview. They are interviewed by competent interviewers who will try to assess his personality and whether he suitable for the post he has applied for or not. They keep a record of his whole career in front of them to assess his qualities.

Application procedure

Candidates are required to apply UPSC Geologist Examination Online using the link www.upsconline.nic.in   Detailed instructions for filling up Online Applications for Geologist are available on the above-mentioned website.

Candidates may also apply offline in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for all its examinations, which can be processed on computerized machines. Form should be purchased from the designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices only and not from any other agency. This form can be used only once and for only one examination. Candidates, applying offline, must use the form supplied with the Information Brochure only and they should in no case use photocopy, reproduction, or any unauthorized printed copy of the Form. The duly filled in Geologist application form and the Acknowledgement Card should be mailed in the special envelope to the following address
