Central Agricultural University is the most important university of North East India, dealing with agriculture and horticulture. It was established in Manipur in 1992 with an objective to groom agricultural researchers and students in the region. But the Central Agricultural University became functional with the joining of first Vice-Chancellor on 13 September, 1993. The colleges of the university are spread across all the seven states of the region. Central Agricultural University has been functioning as a proactive research in the field of agricultural sciences for the seven states of North East India.

CAU offers wide-ranging programmes of agricultural sciences. The headquarters of Central Agricultural University is situated in the capital city of Imphal. The mission of the university is to be a center of Excellence in teaching, research and extension education in the field of agriculture and allied sciences. The university provides hostel facilities for both Boys and Girls. 2 hostels for Boys (UG & PG Hostel) and one hostel for Girls. The library of CAU has more than 10,000 books, 70 Indian journals on Agriculture allied subject and 16 foreign journals are subscribed every year.
