Mahatma Gandhi University was established on 2nd, October 1983. It is the 5th University in the Kerala which provides with quality higher education. The university campus is spread over a vast expanse of 110acres in Athirampuzha. The university has 8 satellite campuses at Soorya Kalady Hills, Puthuppally, Pullarikunnu, Gandhinagar, Thodupuzha, Chuttippara, Nattasserry and Cheruvandoor. Mahatma Gandhi University offers 250 courses approved from University Grants Commission, India.
The university has 22departments and 237 affiliated colleges. Mahatma Gandhi University received B+ accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Mahatma Gandhi University started with an aim to initiate the self-financing stream in the University system and was able to carve a niche in professional and job oriented education in Kerala. Mahatma Gandhi University pioneered the total literacy campaign in Kerala with their project in Kottayam. Kottayam was the first district in India to have achieved 100% literacy.
