Government Medical College Sangli

A new medical "Government Medical College" was started in Miraj by government of Maharashtra in 1962 when the first batch of students were admitted. At the beginning the college was located in the premises of Wanless Hospital, Miraj. College acquired huge land outside Miraj on Pandharpur road.Then Anatomy, Physiology departments were built seperately. This land was known as "Fasicha Maal" because when Miraj was aseperate Sansthan under British rule they used to hang the guilty/criminal openly on this vast open land. Department of Pathology, Pharmacology and Forensic Medicine were located in the Wanless hospital premises.First batch was of 60 students. They appeared for MBBS exam in oct 1966. The college was affiliated to Shivaji University, Kolhapur till the starting of seperate university for medical sciences called Maharashtra University of Health Sciences ( MUHS) which is located in Nasik . Somewhere in 1973 Civil Hospital located at Sangli was affiliated to this college.
