B R Ambedkar Bihar University was established in 1952 as a state university. The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognized by University Grant Commission, UGC, Government of India. The university is a prestigious institution of teaching and learning in Muzaffarpur region and offers a range of full-time and part-time courses ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate and research level.

Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, established in 1992, is a public university conducting graduate, post graduate and research programs in conventional and professional disciplines. Located at Madhepura, it has been recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. It is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The university jurisdiction extends up to Madhepura, Purnea and Koshi.

Located near Munger, in the Indian state of Bihar, Bihar Yoga Bharati (BYB) is a yoga institute for the study of yoga in a gurukul environment. BYB is dedicated to the Indian Rishi tradition, Vedic lifestyle and Sanatan Sanskriti (the eternal culture) of yoga.

Bihar Yoga Bharati (BYB), an Institute for Advanced Studies in Yogic Sciences, was established by Swami Niranjanananda at Munger in 1994 to teach the yogic sciences. Bihar Yoga Bharati (BYB) studies yoga in a gurukul environment.

Central University of Bihar (CUB) has been founded by Govt. of India by the Act of Parliament: The Central University of Bihar seeks to educate and develop human resources for the development of the country, establish linkages with industries for the promotion of science and technology, and pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and well being of the people, their intellectual, academic and cultural development.

The Bihar Government has established Chanakya National Law University (CNLU) on August 15th, 2006 at Patna under the able guidance of its Vice - Chancellor/Pro - Chancellor, Prof. Dr. A. Lakshminath, former Dean and Registrar, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. CNLU was established under the Chanakya National Law University Act, 2006 (Bihar Act No. 24 of 2006) and included in section 2(f) of the U.G.C. Act, 1956.

This is a unique initiative in the field of Legal Education in India. The first batch of students would be graduating in the year 2011

Jai Prakash University, a prestigious center in higher education in the state of Bihar, was established in 1990 by the enactment of Bihar State Universities Act, 1976. The territorial jurisdiction of the university extends over the whole of Saran Division comprising three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj.

JP University offers job oriented vocational courses for bridging the gap between education and financial status of the population of the region. Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University was established in 1961 is State University. The university is situated in District Darbhanga of Bihar State. It has jurisdiction over entire State of Bihar. The University provides courses at Intermediate, Graduate and Postgraduate level and conducts research work The University has an outstanding assortment of nearly 5562 rare manuscripts including six illustrated manuscripts of the Ramayana, Gitagovinda, Srimadbhagavata and Durga Saptasati etc. The few manuscripts of Vidyapati, Mahesh Thakur composed in their own scripts are among the proud possession of the University.

Lalit Narayan Mithila University or LNMU Darbhanga is a teaching-cum-affiliating University. Mithila University was established by an ordinance in 1972. The university has under its jurisdiction several constituent colleges as well as affiliated colleges. It has been recognized by University Grant Commission (UGC) in 1986 on account of its performance in providing education and training. LNMU Darbhanga is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Magadh University is a university in the state of Bihar, India. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university is now governed by Bihar State University Act 1976. It is located at Bodh Gaya where Lord Buddha got enlightenment. Magadh University is situated in a lush green and pollution- and noise-free atmosphere. The university provides facilities for higher learning and research in the faculties of Science, Social Sciences, Humanities and Commerce.

Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University was established in the year 1998. The University is located in Bailey road, Patna. It was established by the Bihar state government under the provision of Bihar State Universities Act 1976. The center of the University is Patna and its jurisdiction extends throughout Bihar. The University has been given notification from Department of Human Resource Development to improve the education standard in Arabic and Persian language and also to introduce other branches of education with collaboration with other university in Bihar.

Nalanda Open University is the only University in the State of Bihar meant for imparting education exclusively through the system of distance learning. Nalanda Open University was founded in 1987 by an ordinance of the Government of Bihar. The University is named after the famous Nalanda University of Ancient India. The University is recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC), and University Grants Commission (UGC).

Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is a prestigious institution for the learning of Buddhist doctrines and Pali. It had been set up in 1952 by the Government of Bihar under the guidance of Ven. Bhikshu Jagdish Kashyap. He was the founder director of the institute. Nava Nalanda Mahavihar is presently under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and has been granted autonomy. The faculty consists of scholars of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, Buddhist history and archeology. Candidates both from inside and outside of India, interested in the study of Buddhism come here to pursue their academic goals.

Patna University, seventh oldest university in India and first in Bihar, was established in 1917. The university has true national character which transcends the linguistic, cultural and political boundaries. Patna University has several constituent and affiliated colleges, imparting education in diverse fields. The university was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as early as 1956.

Rajendra Agricultural University (RAU) is one of the largest agricultural universities in India. It is located at Pusa in Samastipur District of Bihar. It was established in 1970 with the mission to develop technology and strategies for enhancement in agriculture and allied sciences. RAU Samastipur has been enlisted in the recognized universities of the UGC, and is also one of the paneled members of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, also known as Bhagalpur University, is a public university in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. The school is named for famous freedom fighter Tilka Manjhi. The university was established on 12 July 1960 having local colleges initially associated to Patna University. Its campus is around 264 acres (1.07 km2) of lush green area. The university has more than 36 teaching departments, around 24 affiliated colleges, and four research centres. The university is fully accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council and has tied with major international universities such as University of Vienna, the University of Bristol, the University of Kent, University of Lyon, University of Notre Dame, etc.

Founded in 1992, Veer Kunwar Singh University (VKSU) is located at Arrah in Bihar. It was established under Bihar University Act 1976. It has been named after the well known national hero and distinguished freedom fighter Veer Kunwar Singh. Veer Kunwar Singh University is a public university approved by University Grants Commission (UGC). The university fulfills the educational needs of the Bhojpur region of Bihar. The university is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
