Doon University, situated in the picturesque town of Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand, is an autonomous center of higher learning. The Forest Research Institute is an institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and is a premier institution in the field of forestry research in India. It is located at Dehradun in Uttarakhand. It was established in 1906 and is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. In 1991, it had been declared a deemed university by the University Grants Commission

Graphic Era Institute of Technology Dehradun, now renamed Graphic Era University (GEU), is a college of premier institute of technical and management learning in Uttarakhand. It is located amidst the beautiful and serene surroundings of Rajaji National Park, Dehradun. Established in 2001, the institute is a member of The Association of Indian Universities. The technical courses offered in the institute are affiliated to Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun, while its academic courses are affiliated to HNB Garhwal University. GEU has now been declared as a Deemed-to-be-University. All courses of the institute have been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) New Delhi and Ministry of HRD, Government of India

Himgiri Zee University (Himgiri Zee University)has been established to meet the growing demand for trained human resources in various social, educational, scientific, technical and professional organizations so as to channel human energy towards sustainable economic and social development.

In order to make a positive difference to education and employment, Shri Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Essel Group of Industries and Zee Telefilms had brought  together in 1995 a group of committed anthropologists, sociologists, economists and development communications professionals to set up TALEEM Research Foundation in Ahmedabad.  One of the mandates of Taleem Research Foundation was to set up the Himgiri Zee University.

University of Petroleum & Energy Studies (UPES) is the specialised university for energy and oil sector studies. It is situated at Dehradun and has been established through an act of the State Legislature of Uttarakhand in the year 2003.

Uttarakhand Technical University was established in 2004 with the aim of propagating and enhancing the level of technical education in the state of Uttarakhand. Popularly known as UTU, it offers higher education in the field of Engineering, Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Hotel Management and Catering, Business Administration and IT. The University is situated in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand. Uttarakhand Technical University has several affiliated Technical colleges and Institutions across Uttarakhand.
