On November 7th 1996, the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University was renamed Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University to pay tribute to the Parliamentarian Acharya N.G. Ranga, an outstanding educationist, peasant leader and freedom fighter. A huge bronze statue of Acharya N.G. Ranga was framed at the main campus of the University.

The university offers courses leading to graduate, post-graduate and PhD degrees. Admissions in under-graduate courses are done on basis of the performance of the candidates in the state-wide Engineering, Agriculture and medicine Common Entrance Test, EAMCET, conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. For Masters Degree courses admissions are based on the past academic record and performance in entrance test while for admission into PhD, the past academic record and performance in interview is the criterion for selection.

Dr B R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) was formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University. It is located in located in the city of Hyderabad. The Open University has been instrumental in opening numerous opportunities for working people and those who want to improve their academic qualifications and professional skills. Established by an act of the Andhra Pradesh state legislature, it has developed a wide network of more than 200 study centers spread throughout the state of Andhra Pradesh.

English and Foreign Languages University (EFL University) is a UGC recognized university established in 1972. It is situated in the city of nawabs, Hyderabad. The main campus of EFL University is in Hyderabad; however it also operates campus at Lucknow and Shillong. The EFLU provides the study of English and foreign languages. The university is known for training the teachers, production of teaching materials, and extension services to improvise the teaching standard of English and various Foreign Languages in India. The EFLU currently offers academic programmes in English, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

Under the special policy of providing a systematic education in Art and Architecture to the present needs of Human Facility and Entertainment Industry Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University was established by Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature No.31 of 2008.

Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, situated in Hyderabad, is the first technical university in India. Popularly known as JNTU, the university was named after the name of former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. JNTU was established with the purpose of imparting and improving the standards of higher technical education in India in general and in the state in particular. The university also has its campus in the districts of Kakinada and Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. 

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) with ‘A’ Grade, for its academic excellence. The university is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is recognized and funded by University Grants Commission (UGC). The distance education mode of JNTU is being recognized by Distance Education Council (DEC). The university is imparting quality technical education in the state, for the past four decades.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University is a central university named after the first education minister of India. It is a UGC recognized public university situated in the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad. It was established in 1998 with a vision to promote Urdu language and vocational education. The University has recently been awarded "A" Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC). Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) also has a Directorate of Distance Education where around 15,000 students take admission in various under graduate and post graduate courses. MANUU has 9 regional centers, 5 sub-regional centers and 140 study centers in various states in India.

Osmania University (also known as OU for short) is a public university situated in the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is named after the Last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The name derives from the name of the founder, Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Nizam of Hyderabad. It is one of the oldest modern universities in India. It was the first Indian University to have Urdu (اردو) language as medium of instruction. It is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 300,000 students on its various campuses and affiliated colleges. It is particularly well known for its Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Engineering and Technology departments. Its faculty of management is considered as one of the best management institutions under the university system. Osmania Medical College was once part of the same university system. It is now transferred under the supervision of NTR University of Health Sciences.

Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, located in Hyderabad, was founded by the state government with the merger of Sahitya, Sangeetha, Nataka, Nritya and Lalitha Kala Academies, International Telugu Institute and Telugu Bhasha Samithi into one. Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University functions as central organization for teaching and research in language and literature, history and culture, fine arts and performing arts, religion and philosophy of the Telugu speaking people.

University of Hyderabad is a central university situated in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. It is a premier institution of post graduate teaching and research and was established on 2nd October, 1974. The University of Hyderabad also offers courses under distance learning programs. It was recently named as no. 1 University in the country in the research and development arena. The university is situated at GachiBowli, at a distance of 20kms from the city of Hyderabad on the old Hyderabad-Bombay highway.

There are 8 hostels for men and 5 hostels for women provided by the University to stay in. There is a shopping complex inside the campus and a health care center for students.
