Central Agricultural University is the most important university of North East India, dealing with agriculture and horticulture. It was established in Manipur in 1992 with an objective to groom agricultural researchers and students in the region. But the Central Agricultural University became functional with the joining of first Vice-Chancellor on 13 September, 1993. The colleges of the university are spread across all the seven states of the region. Central Agricultural University has been functioning as a proactive research in the field of agricultural sciences for the seven states of North East India.
Manipur University is one of the Central Universities of India. It was established on 5th June, 1980 at Canchipur in the capital city of Imphal. The former Jawaharlal Nehru University Post-Graduate Centre was merged with the Manipur University on 1st April, 1981. Manipur University has been playing a pivotal role in promoting higher education in North East India. Manipur University was declared as Central University of India on 13th October 2005.
The campus of Manipur University is spread across a wide expanse of 287acres. Manipur University serves with only post graduate courses. It has 28 departments and 72 affiliated colleges. The university is situated near to the old palace of the kingdom of Manipur. The library of Manipur University has a collection of more than 1,20,000 books and it also subscribes to 280 national and 43 foreign journals. Manipur University provides hostel facilities for both boys and girls.
