Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) is established through Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010 (Meghalaya Act No.6 of 2011), published in the Gazette of Meghalaya vide No.LL (B).138/2010/41.The Promoting body of MGU has vast experience in the field of Education. University is setup with an objective of providing best quality education to the students.

Martin Luther Christian University was established in July 2005. It is the first full-fledged Christian University in Shillong, the capstone to more than two centuries of Christian education in the country. The university is named after Martin Luther (1483–1546), the father of reformation, the first Christian leader to promote higher education for the general populace.

NEHU (North Eastern Hill University) was established on July 19th, 1973 in Shillong. The main objective of the NEHU is to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in unique branches of learning that pay special attention towards the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people and society. NEHU is a UGC recognized university providing quality education.

North Eastern Hill University has 8 schools and 36 departments offering different undergraduate and post graduate courses. The university is affiliated to over 60 colleges.  The central library of the university has a collection of over 2,00,000 books, 38,000 periodicals and it also subscribes to 316 foreign and 366 Indian current journals. The University has been accorded a 4 star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Techno Global University (TGU) had formed at Shillong in Meghalaya. Techno India Group (TIG), started in 1985, is a constellation of knowledge campuses that are spread across various geographical locations of the country. TIG is the promoting consortium behind Techno Global University. The Group offers quality education, from nursery level to the postgraduate and doctoral level, in the fields of Science, Technology, Medicine and Management.
