Assam University is a UGC recognized Central University of India, situated about 20kms from Silchar at Durgakona. The campus covers an area of 600 acres in the South Assam region, bordering with Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland. Assam University was established in year 1994. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating University and it has a total of 9 Schools which offer Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Information Sciences, Physical Sciences, Technology and Management Studies. There are 29 Departments under these nine Schools. The five districts under the jurisdiction of Assam University have 51 Undergraduate Colleges. It acts as the main hub of education in the seven sisters of India.
