Alagappa University was brought into existence by a special Act of the state government in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the UGC, Government of India.

Alagappa University, hitherto of unitary type, was converted into an affiliating type by the Tamil Nadu Universities Act, 2002, with a view to widen the horizon of its academic activities by bringing into its jurisdiction the Arts and Science colleges in the Districts of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga. Further, as per this Act, the Government colleges in the above districts have become the constituent colleges of Alagappa University. As a member of the AIU and the ACU(ACU), it has rewarding relations with other academic institutions, research laboratories and industrial establishments that promise a spectacular feature. The University’s motto is “Excellence in Action” and the University keeps before it the vision of excellence in all spheres of its action.

Anna University is an university in Tamil Nadu, India, offering higher education in engineering, technology and applied sciences. Between 2007 and 2010 it was split into six universities, namely, Anna University, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Chennai, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, Anna University Tirunelveli and Anna University of Technology, Madurai.

Anna University was formed on September 4, 1978, as a unitary type of university. It integrated four technical institutions in the city of Chennai (previously known as Madras), including the College of Engineering, Guindy, established in 1794, and Madras Institute of Technology, established in 1949, which offered the first engineering degrees in India.

Annamalai University is a state university in Annamalai Nagar, Tamil Nadu, India. The university offers courses of higher education in the arts and sciences.

Bharath University (Bharath Institute of Higher Education & Research) was established in the year 1984, and acquired deemed to be University status in the year 2003 by University Grants Commission (UGC). The university has four campuses namely Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (Selaiyur, Chennai), Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital (Pallikaranai, Chennai), Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital (Chromepet, Chennai) and Sree Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences at Pondicherry.

Bharathiar University is a postgraduate university in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, South India. Named after Tamil poet Subramania Bharathiar, the university was established in February 1982 and was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1985.

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a research and education institute in Chennai, India. It was founded by the SPIC Science Foundation in 1989, and offers undergraduate as well as postgraduate programmes in physics, mathematics and computer science, besides its key strength in the form of high-end research in mathematics. CMI is noted for its research in the field of algebraic geometry, in particular in the area of moduli bundles.

In December 2006, CMI was recognized as a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, making it a deemed university. Until then, the teaching program was offered in association with Bhoj Open University, as it offered more flexibility.

The Dr. M.G.R. University is a university with its main campus in the city of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

It was founded by A.C. Shanmugam under the Kannamal Educational Trust. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai Mooga Ambagai Dental College were established in 1987 and 1991 respectively. These two colleges were then merged into constituent colleges of Dr. Educational and Research Institute University, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission.

Gandhigram Rural University is nestled in the enclaves of the beautiful Sirumalai range. The University has been accredited with five star status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is recognized in India and abroad for its contribution to rural education.

Dimensions of research and extension were added to Gandhigram Rural University in course of time. This three-dimensional approach became a pioneering model which earned appreciation from all over. The work of the Institute invited national attention and the Government of India (Ministry of Education), on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, conferred the status of a Deemed University on the Institute under Section (3) of the UGC Act of 1956, on 3rd August, 1976. 

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is located in Chennai. It was established on 14.11.2008 by the Indian Maritime University Act, 2008 (22 of 2008) It located in Utthandi in Chennai with campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.

Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is a university in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was hived off the Madurai Kamaraj University and was declared open by the then (and current) chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi on September 9, 1990.

The motto of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is "Knowledge is Power". It is named after the Tamil poet and dramatist Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai. The university has 26 departments in art, languages, sciences, engineering and technology. 102 colleges in the Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts are affiliated to it.

Prof.P.Murugesan founded RICST(Ram Institute of Computer Science & Technology) in 1985, way ahead of the IT-wave of the 90's. This pioneering effort in the agricultural district of Thanjavur gained quick recognition by its affiliation to the Bharathidasan University in 1989 for PGDCA course.

SASTRA University (Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy) is a deemed university in the town of Thirumalaisamudram, Thanjavur district,Tamil Nadu, India. Undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses are its focus.

It started in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering, since renamed as the Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. Sathyabama University was established under section (3) of the UGC Act, 1956 Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (A Christian Minority Institution) which was formerly known as Sathyabama Engineering College established by JEPPIAAR EDUCATIONAL TRUST in 1987. It is a pioneer institute imparting knowledge in the areas of engineering, science, technology and education. The institution's progress and contribution in the field of technical education for over two decades made the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India to grant Deemed University status on 16 July.

Sathyabama University is a private university at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India, founded in 1988 as Sathyabama Engineering College by Jeppiaar Educational Trust (formed in 1987) and inaugurated by then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Janaki Ramachandran. It was formerly known as Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (SIST). The university is headed by Dr. Jeppiaar, a former politician under the late M. G. Ramachandran. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). However, its origins are from establishment of Agricultural School in Chennai at Saidapet. It started in the year 1868 and was later transferred to Coimbatore. It was affiliated to Madras University in 1920 and there after in 1971 was acknowledged with the status of a University. Till 1946, TNAU, Coimbatore, was the only college for Agricultural Education in South India.

The Tamil University, India, was established to provide higher research in the Tamil language and advanced study in allied branches such as linguistics, translation, lexicography, music, drama and manuscriptology. M.Phil and Ph.D programmes were introduced in 1992 for disciplines such as Language, Literature, Translation, and Sculpture.

The University of Madras is one of the three oldest universities in India (along with the University of Calcutta and the University of Mumbai). The university is organized on the model of the University of London, was incorporated on 5 September 1857 by an Act of the Legislative Council of India, and is regulated by the University Grants Commission of the government of India.
