Established in year 1964, National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli (NITT) caters to the growing need of manpower in technological industry. Situated in the city of Tiruchirappalli, NITT is a public engineering & technology college. It was initiated as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli is ranked No. 12 by India Today in the list of Top 25 Engineering colleges of India.

In year 2003, this institution was ranted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE. NITT is one of 18 National Institutes of Technology in India and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance (INI). The institute has 16 departments offering various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programmes in engineering & technology. The institute campus covers a major area of 800 acres and has state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities. NITT recently received a generous grant from the World Bank and is in the process of expansion.
