Andhra University is one of the older premier universities of India. It was established in 1925 and shared affiliation with Madras University in the initial years. Andhra University is the first university in India which offered an under graduate programme.
There are a total of 575 affiliated colleges of Andhra University, spread across the five districts under the territorial jurisdiction. There are more than 76,000 enrollment in undergraduate courses and 20,000 students in PG Courses. The University is supported by about 860 teachers and more than 2500 non-teaching and technical staff. Andhra University is one of the top universities in South India. The university also runs a school of distance education which was started in 1972. Andhra University (AU) is a UGC recognized public university. The library of Andhra University was started in 1927. Initially named as Andhra University Library, it was renamed in year 1968 after the former Vice-Chancellor Dr. V.S.Krishna. The Library has two branch Libraries, one in Engineering College and other in Law College. The Library is housed in an imposing structure overlooking the sea.
