Tripura University is a UGC recognized university which was established on 2nd October 1987. The university has 16 departments and offers 38 courses. It also promotes cultural activities with its centre for Tribal Language. Tripura University was declared as the Central University on 2nd June 2007. Tripura University epitomizes the aspirations of the state’s people for academic excellence at the highest level. Distance Education segment of Tripura University was introduced in 1996.

Distance learning was introduced to impart higher education through distance mode with multi-media approach. The MBB College in Tripura was previously affiliated to the Calcutta University, later the college was elevated to the position of Tripura University. The university is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Computer centre, canteen, gym, sports board, bank and post office are in the vicinity of Tripura University. The university also has a 100 bedded hostel for boys and 40 bedded hostel for girls. The central library of Tripura University has a collection of over 50,000 books and 4,000 e-journals.
