In year 1937 the University of Travancore was established which was later renamed and became University of Kerala. It is a UGC recognized university, situated in Thiruvananthapuram. It was declared as a Central University in year 2009. Kerala University is ranked as B++ grade University by The National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC). The University of Kerala has a total of 16 faculties and forty one departments of teaching and research. It is affiliated to over 150 colleges, spread across all parts of Kerala.

Kerala University also promoted distance education, catering the needs of thousands of students. Apart from traditional degree and post graduate courses, University of Kerala also runs degree courses like Computer Science and Computer Application. The University of Kerala has widened its horizons by entering into academic cooperation with some foreign Universities like Claremont of the United States of America and Valladolid of Spain.
