Institute of Medical Sciences Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU) came into being as College of Medical Sciences in the year 1960. Initially, it had only 9 Departments of Modern Medicine. In 1971, the college was upgraded as Institute of Medical Sciences. Presently, the Institute has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialities and 8 Departments of Ayurveda.
Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU is perhaps the only institute in India, which offers courses quality education both in the Modern Medicine and Ayurveda. The institute is located within the University premises, which gives opportunity for research interactions with well equipped centres of excellence in the University.
